History – Santa Fe Depot

While in law school in 1976, Mike Matthews had the opportunity of working with Frank T. Abraham, founding member of Kronzer, Abraham & Watkins, a prestigious personal injury law firm located in Houston, Texas. That firm had just renovated and moved into an historical building along Buffalo Bayou in downtown Houston to serve as their law office. This experience served as inspiration.

In 1990, the firm of Griffin & Matthews purchased the historic Santa Fe Railroad Depot, a contributing building to the National Register in the Beaumont Commercial Historic District, located in downtown Beaumont and undertook the renovation and rehabilitation of the building for a law office and warehouse. Griffin & Matthews moved into the restored Santa Fe Depot in January of 1993, and has continuously maintained its law practice in the Depot.

The Santa Fe Depot was named as one of three finalists in Best Rehabilitation Project in Texas by the Texas Downtown Association for 1993, and has been on the Walking Tour of Beaumont Main Street.

The Depot remains a contributing building to the National Register in the Beaumont Commercial Historic District.
